Makeham Residence
The Makeham residence is a new family home on a sloping 3 hectare block with Northern frontage in the country town of Junee, NSW, overlooking a golf course and pastoral land.
The client's brief was for a spacious four bedroom family home to raise their three children in. The design was to include guest facilities, garage to house two vehicles and a large workshop. Their preference was for a traditionally styled home with modern and functional internal spaces.
The house was designed with a central living core, which extends from the front of the residence to the rear elevated timber deck, to allow Northern light to enter the living spaces as well as ensuring the magnificent views to the South were maintained. The children's wing is to the West of the living core and the parent's wing to the East. To utilise and flow with the natural slope of the land, the garage, workshop and guest room were incorporated below and along the rear of the house.
Materials were selected to blend with the rural environment in natural textures and tones. Split face sandstone look blockwork was used to first floor sill level with contrasting chocolate 'roman split' bricks over. Smooth face banding adds further interest to break up the two storey rear wall. Colorbond customorb roofing and low maintenance aluminium windows in earthy tones complete the "Australian Homestead" ambience.
